The illusion of ventriloquism is in part, creating the illusion of life. The audience must buy into the idea that at least two separate characters talking to accomplish this. Unfortunately, this is a problem area for most “ventriloquists”.
When the vocal difference is not strong, the ventriloquist act suffers. I see too many ventriloquists who neglect to create any real vocal changes. Raising your voice an octave does not make a real difference when the character’s voice doesn’t differ in tonal and inflection quality.
