Janice is a student here on Learn-Ventriloquism. Today we continue discussing her introduction to the art and the upcoming VentHaven conVENTion. I understand she is planning to return, so if you will be at conVENTion, make sure to say hello to her!

Video Transcript:

Not everybody makes a livelihood out of it. Sometimes it’s just nice to get out there and share it with other people — and certainly working with a children’s hospital would be a great way. Do you do a lot of charity work with hospitals?

No, never. But that’s kind of how I thought I could show it. Apparently some people think I’m a little cuckoo for doing this. But I’m sure kids would be a lot more forgiving. Adults tend to forgive once they see you’re serious about it.

Yeah, it’s that stigma of picking up a puppet and playing with it — people think you’re a big kid, have a split personality, or you’re just plain crazy.

So, you’re married. Where are you from again?

I’m in Vancouver, BC.

Okay, Vancouver. Are you familiar with any ventriloquists up that way? Do you know of any?

I don’t think I know any — none at all. Even at the shop where I bought Yam Yam, I asked the lady if she knew of any society or group, and she didn’t seem to know.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to step on his line.

It’s okay. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now, have you thought about trying to come out to the ventriloquist convention by any chance?

I’m really looking at it this year, but I’m not too sure yet. I also have another trip I planned a while back, and it’s also in July, but later in the month. So I don’t know if I can make it work.

Yeah, I understand that completely. Let me tell you — if you ever get the chance to come down, it would blow you away. Terry Fator will be there this year.

Oh, really?

Yes, he’s fantastic. He’s coming in from Vegas to do a show in Cincinnati, and they’re bussing everybody from the convention over to the show for free. It’s part of your registration. You’ll get to see Terry do a live show, and his act is phenomenal.

Jeff Dunham will also be there on Saturday. You’ll get a chance to see him, too. And the great thing is, unlike some conventions — like magic conventions, where the big names don’t really mingle with people — at the ventriloquist convention, everybody’s friendly.

You’ll see Jeff walking down the hall. You can talk to Terry. They’re great guys, and there’s so much to learn and see. If you get a chance at some point, I think you’d really enjoy yourself.
