A six part interview with ventriloquist Lisa Laird.

Video Transcript:

First of all, congratulations — you just won an award! Tell us about what you did and what you’ve won.

Well, I won first place in the adult ventriloquism category for the video contest. I submitted two clips, each about two minutes long, into the contest. There were six judges, and they did all the judging. Yesterday I found out that I won first prize.

Congratulations, that’s great!

Thank you. I was thrilled.

So now you’re in the running for the grand prize?

Yes, that’s right.

I’m sure you’re out there asking people to vote?

I’m sorry, say again?

Vote for me!

Okay, I will do that. I’ll get on and vote, even though I don’t think I’m supposed to.

No, no — that’s fine!

That’s got to make you feel wonderful, knowing all your hard work has paid off.

Yes, it really does. I was actually quite surprised.

Now, are you doing ventriloquism for a living?

Well, that depends on your definition of “for a living.” It is my full-time job, yes, but I don’t have to support my family on what I do because my husband works. My job as a performing ventriloquist basically pays for itself. Anything extra outside of my expenses goes right back into the business — new puppets, props, whatever I need. But no, I don’t have to support my family entirely on what I do.
